straight talk: hair coloring TLC!

As a master hair stylist and obsessive colorist, there are few things in life I find more creatively satisfying than giving a girl (or guy) in my chair a truly life changing hair color! You know, the kind that makes you feel like a boss and own every room you pass through?! Many anti-salon hair enthusiasts find their way to me after experiencing a DIY hair coloring fiasco, and that's perfectly ok! I'm an avid DIY-er myself and I applaud their efforts! Others find me because their hair coloring needs a little TLC, so I thought I'd include some basic tips to help ensure you're getting the most out of your hair color! Life is too short to not look fabulous, am I right?!
RULE #1: Always use high quality products on your color treated hair! You might have the most expensive hair color from a top stylist, but if your hair products are cheap, you are quite literally washing your investment down the shower drain! Because all hair that's been colored has been chemically treated, the hair shaft will be much more fragile than untreated hair. Therefore, it's a good practice to include high quality hair care products into your beauty budget. For example, a weekly hydrating hair mask is an excellent addition to your hair regimen. You really can see and feel the difference!
RULE #2: Protect your hair from the summertime sun! You religiously apply SPF to your skin to prevent sunburn and premature aging - why wouldn't you use the same effort to protect your hair from the damaging rays? This is doubly important if your hair is going to be exposed to salt water and/or chlorine. Before taking a dip, wet your hair in the sink and comb a small amount of conditioner through it for protection. I'd even go so far as to recommend a swimming cap, but obviously that's not always the most appealing option!
RULE #3: Red heads need extra hair TLC! Though it's one of the most striking hair color treatments, red heads need to understand that there's a good deal of after care that's required to keep the color looking lustrous and brilliant. In this case, when it comes to shampooing, remember these three words: less is more! Wait at least 48 hours after having your red hair coloring before washing, and if you find your color fading a bit faster than you anticipated, have your colorist schedule a gloss for your hair to maintain its ruddy depth and radiance.
